TAKE IT EASY WITH MINERS-GNASSM

The National chairman of the Association, Collins Osei Kusi, appealed to government to exercise restrain in its bid to fight small scale-miners since the industry has created jobs for many youth and also contributed immensely to the growth of the mining industry.

According to him, contribution of the sector to the socio-economic development of the country cannot be underestimated.

Mr. Kusi made the appeal at a news Conference in Kumasi.

The General Secretary of the Association, Godwin Armah, said the Association encourages legal, safe and environmentally friendly practices by its members and also cooperates with statutory regulatory agencies such as the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency in their monitoring activities.

Mr. Armah however, condemns the irresponsible mining activities of the unlicensed miners leading to destructions of forest reserves and water bodies.

The General Secretary noted that the Association is not a law enforcement agency and thus can prevent or stop the illegality in the sector.

However, GNASSM is ready with its taskforce at the various mining district to team up with the national security apparatus to identify where illegal activities are taking place so that such miscreants can be brought to book.
