KMA'S IMINENT DEMOLITION IN KSI
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, is to
pull down all buildings and other structures located within water course in the
metropolis before the current rainy season intensifies.
An area within the
Dichemso Electoral Area near the Kumasi Airport Roundabout where the level of flooding
at the least rainfall is very pronounced is the main target for the demolition.
The new KMA Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, made this known to the media
after touring flood-prone areas within the metropolis so as to help the KMA
adopt the most effective strategies to reduce to the bearest minimum, any
possible havoc that would be associated with the rains.
Accompanied by the
Regional Director of the NADMO, Metro Engineer of the Urban Roads Department,
representatives of the Metro Engineer, Metro Coordinating Director and other
key staff of the Assembly, the Metro Chief Executive visited areas such as
Manhyia, Akwatialine, Moshie Zongo and Tafo Nhyiaeso part of which communities
have been identified to flood-prone where sometimes, people get drowned by
running water during rains.
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi was very disturbed by the situation
at Dichemso where the Aboabo Stream breaks its banks anytime it rains and
causes severe damage to persons and property.
It was realized that the perennial flooding
problem has forced some of the landlords to abandon their properties because
they can no longer cope with the problem while part of the main road has been
eroded thereby creating danger for motorists.
The caretaker of one of such
houses, Akosua Mary told Ashanti Today that her mother, while in
Germany, remitted funds to an agent build
her a house only for that person to rather buy a complete house in that
low-lying area.
She said the entire house becomes heavily flooded anytime it
rains but she declined an advice to vacate blaming poverty for the decision.
A
man was electrocuted within that same location two years ago while helping some
victims of the flood to escape.
The Kumasi Mayor explained that as an Assembly
with a responsibility to control and manage development in the city, the KMA
cannot sit aloof for the rains to cause any catastrophe before reacting.
Mr.
Osei Assibey directed the Metro Engineering Department to submit a report
detailing the number of houses and areas that need to covered under the
demolition exercise for an immediate action to be taken to save lives and
property.
He said the drainage system being constructed at Akwatialine will be
replicated in other suburbs to reduce flooding.
The Regional Director of NADMO,
Kwabena Nsenkyire, agreed with the Metro Chief Executive for the demolition to
take place.
