SAVE BABA YARA SPORT STADIUM !!

Facilities at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi are deteriorating at such a rate that if urgent measures are not instituted now, the entire stadium could soon collapse.

Facilities such as the tartan tracks and runway for athletics are no more suitable for the purpose for which they were procured, part of the roof ripped off by rainstorm, the scoreboard which has been out of use for about two years now is yet to be repaired even though work has already begun in a piece meal while the flood lighting system is working at only half capacity due to faulty bulbs.

The 43 thousand all seating stadium has eight thousand of the seats destroyed mainly by second cycle students during their annual inter schools Zonal athletics competitions.

A tour of the stadium by Ashanti Today revealed also that some of the public places of convenience have become an eyesore due to misuse and lack of regular maintenance.

Similarly, 11 of the rented stores at the Stadium that help in internal revenue mobilization have also been allegedly locked up by their occupants at the expense of the management.

To make matters worse, government’s monthly subvention for management of the stadium has ceased for about three years now thereby making maintenance of the sporting facility very challenging.

The only amenity found to be in perfect condition at the stadium was the Closed Circuit security system.

In an interview, the Ashanti Regional Sports Development Officer, Ewuntomah Iddrisu, said management has been saddled with huge monthly utility bills that consume the chunk of internal revenue generated from usage of the stadium.

Mr. Iddrisu disclosed for instance that, the Stadium presently owes the Electricity Company of Ghana about 200 thousand Ghana Cedis in addition to the over 11 thousand Ghana Cedi monthly bills.

The management is also severely challenged with monthly water bill of 12 thousand Ghana Cedis which has become difficult for the management.

The Regional Sports Development Officer expressed serious concern about the uncooperative behaviour of authorities of the Ashanti Regional Schools and Colleges Sports Federation in the payment of the stadium user charges during the Inter schools’ athletics competition.

Mr. Iddrisu appealed for state intervention to enable the management settle its huge indebtedness to free the meager revenue for maintenance of the stadium.
