KSI CENTRAL MARKET IN FLAMES AGAIN
The Kumasi Central Market today, Mon, April 10, was gutted by fire causing destruction of goods worth millions of
Ghana Cedis.
The fire occurred around 1:20pm between Roman Hill and Central
Market at a popular spot known as mattress house.
Although a number of fire
tenders from various Fire Stations within the Kumasi Metropolis were there to
put out the fire, extensive damage has been caused as shop owners within the
affected area of the market could barely salvage their wares.
An eyewitness
noted that the load in a KIA mini truck belonging one of the mattress
manufacturing companies in Kumasi came into direct contact with some of the electric
cables due to the height of the loaded.
The fire is said to have intensified as
a result of some flammable materials within some of the shop.
A branch of the
Asante Akyem Rural Bank Limited within the area was partly damaged by the fire
while the KIA mini truck through which the fire is said to have occurred has
also burnt beyond repairs.
Other items destroyed by the fire are large
quantities of mattresses and adhesives.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon
Osei Mensah together with some security personnel and NADMO officials has
visited the fire scene to know at firsthand the extent of damage and also
console the victims.
Mr. Osei Mensah advised hawkers who sell in the middle of
the road to relocate saying that it is not only illegal but unsafe for them.
He
revealed that an earlier ultimatum to the hawkers to move their wares off the
road which expired on the 7th of this month had not been adhered to and
therefore warned the hawkers to heed to the directive or risk being sanctioned.
The Ghana National Fire Service has commenced investigations to unravel the
actual circumstances that led to the fire outbreak.
