SNAKE IN A CAR

There was a near pandemonium at Bantama in Kumasi this afternoon when a snake was found in a private saloon car. The driver of the Mazda saloon car with registration number AW 1600 Y, Michael Owusu told Ashanti Today that he felt something moving on his leg while driving. When he took a look at what is was, to his surprise, he saw the average-sized looking yellowish snake trying to escape from the car. He said while he screamed for help, he fled through the passenger's gate. Mr. Owusu suspected that the snake could have entered the vehicle when he parked it under a tree near the Ejisu Government Hospital in the Ejisu Juaben Municipality. According to him, he had entered the main Abrepo Junction-Sofoline road from the Metro Mass Transport terminal at Bantama when he found the snake. The snake could have possibly hidden in the engine but was escaping due to the heat. The man who killed the snake was gave his name only as Seidu, said the reptile was killed at about 1.30

KUMASI CENTRAL MARKET CATCHES FIRE AGAIN

Debris of the wildfire Madam Patricia Nkansah-victim of the wildfire A swift response by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service to a distress call last night helped to avert what could have been another major disaster at the Kumasi Central Market from wildfire.  Even with that quick response, two stores in addition to some stalls were not spared by the ravaging fire which occurred at about 8 pm yesterday.  The incident took place at the section of the Market where assorted wares such as jewelry, cloths, footwear and wrist watches are sold.   The actual cause of last night’s outbreak is yet to be identified especially so as the place was said to be without electricity supply at the close of business yesterday.  At the time of Ashanti Today's   visit to the scene this morning, some of the victims were still counting their losses and scavenging through the debris to see what could be salvaged.  The total cost of the destruction is also yet t

UNESCO HOLDS CONFERENCE ON GREEN ECONOMY IN KUMASI

                                  United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO in  partnership with the Korean International Cooperation Agency, KOICA, is sponsoring a three-year project code-named Green Economy in three selected   biospheres at a cost of one point-two million Dollars in three sub-Saharan countries.  These are the Bia Biosphere Reserve in the Juabeso and Bia districts of Ghana, Omo Biosphere Reserve at Ijebu in the Ogun State of Nigeria and the East Usambara biosphere Reserve in the Muheza district of Tanzania.  The project, which started last year will end in 2016, aims to engender a symbiotic relationship among residents of the fringed communities of the selected biosphere reserves and the fauna in the reserves for the sake of posterity.  As part of the project, the first Conference involving project implementers from the three participating countries, representatives of the UNESCO and the KOICA is underway in th

GRAPHIC MD DISLIKES ME-KENU

The dismissed Ashanti Regional Editor of the Graphic Communications Group ltd, (GCGL) Daniel Kenu, has blamed the Managing Director of his former employer for his dismissal. Mr. Kenu was handed a dismissal letter by the management of GCGL two days ago for what the employers consider to be a ‘gross misconduct and disloyal to the company’ for unilaterally backing out of a criminal case at a Kumasi Circuit Court about two months ago. The employers, led by the MD, Kenneth Ashigbey, had vowed to pursue a criminal case against the senior brother of Ghana’s Black Stars captain, Baffuor Gyan for allegedly physically assaulting Mr. Kenu. Mr. Kenu had sought to find out the where about of an ace Ghanaian musician friend of Asamoah Gyan, Castro, at a news Conference a day ahead of Ghana’s AFCON match against the Cranes of Uganda at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS HIT KSI STREETS

        A section of the Ghanaian public sector workers this morning took to the streets of Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.     The street protest is in furtherance of their counter-suit against the government over misunderstandings regarding the management of Tier Two of their Pension under the new Pensions law, Act 766. The workers marched through some of the major streets of Kumasi through the central business district of Adum, then the Harper Road through the KMA-Ridge road before ending at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council where they presented their written petition to a representative of the government for attention. The demonstrators, clad in mourning cloth to signify their concerns, marched amidst brass band music.  Others held placards with various messages to communicate their concerns and what they want to be done by government.    However, one thing that is not clear about the street protest is the real object. UEW L 200 STUDENT, 7 OTHERS KILLED IN ACCIDENT

  Eight persons were killed, four of them on the spot, in an accident at Sofoline, a suburb of Kumasi last night.  Five others sustained various degrees of injuries with one of them said to be critical and on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital receiving medical attention.  The Commanding Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Suntreso District Police in Kumasi, ASP Edmund Jones Afutu, who confirmed this to Ashanti Today , disclosed also that the dead include one woman who incidentally is a Level 200 female student of the Kumasi Campus of the University of Education who was returning home from lectures.  According to ASP Afutu, three of those who died on the spot were in a commercial urvan bus which was ran over by cargo truck which supposedly had a break failure.  Also, a taxi driver who realized the accident and was escaping was however trapped and killed by the truck.
