FARMERS DAY AWARD WINNERS SLASHED TO 15

The Ashanti Regional Director of Agriculture, Kwaku Mintah Fordjour has made a passionate appeal to corporate institutions operating in the Ashanti region to provide financial and material support for the Farmers’ Day.
The event is in appreciation of the significant contribution of famers to the development of the country. He admitted a serious financial constraint as one major challenge that could affect the success of this year’s Regional Farmers’ Day to be held on the 5th of next month at Fomena in the Adansi North district.
Speaking to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, the Regional Director of Agric said even though preparations are still underway for the celebration of this year’s edition of the Ashanti region Farmers’ Day, the assistance of well meaning individuals and companies is very much needed.
According to him, a total of 15 hardworking farmers in the region have been selected to receive awards in the various categories out of which one will eventually emerge as the overall Best Regional Farmer for this year.
Mr. Fordjour disclosed also that the number of Regional Award winners has been reduced to the 15 this year so as to improve on the prizes.
He noted that the award winners were selected based on a set criteria.
The farmers must adhere to acceptable environmental and modern farming practices such as best soil and water conservation approaches, a record keeping as well as experience sharing with both the community and colleague farmers.
The Regional Director said special awards will be given to three retired Directors of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in appreciation of their continued contribution to agricultural production in the region even in their retirement.
He commended the Regional Coordinating Council, especially the Ashanti Regional Minister, for the continued support towards the success of the event.
Meanwhile, representative farmers from the Ashanti region at this year’s National Farmers’ Day to be held at Sefwi Wiawso have won four awards under various categories.

Mr. Fordjour mentioned Best National Poultry Farmer, Best National Plantain Farmer, Best National Oil Palm and Best National Cocoyam Farmer as categories won by famers from the region.
