KNUST/LOCAL GOV'T. SERVICE COLLABORATE ON RURAL ECONOMY

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, in partnership with the Local Government Service, has launched a project aimed at identifying the business potential of each of the 216 districts in the country.  The ultimate objective of the project is help the local communities to turn around these business prospects into viable economic and commercial activities to improve the livelihood of the inhabitants.  The first phase of the project, which will last one year starting immediately, will cost one million Ghana Cedis and is being borne by the Local Government Service.  It is christened “District Assemblies Enabled Programme for Accelerated Economic and Social Development at the District Level”.  At the project launch in Kumasi, the Head of the Local Government Service, Dr. Callistus Mahama disclosed that a Bill is currently before Parliament for consideration and passage to give more functions to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as

AFRICAN RULING/OPPOSITION PARTIES RIG ELECTIONS-CATH ARCHBISHOP

The Vice President of the Pontifical Council on Peace and Justice in Africa, Most Reverend Gabriel Justice Anokye, has deplored what he calls real electoral fraud by both ruling and opposition political parties during elections in certain African countries.  According to him, some of the politicians involved confess their nefarious deals and later attribute their victories to God.  Most Rev. Anokye, who has already toured 21 of the African countries including those who have gone to the polls in the last four years, however stated that he is yet to have evidence of election rigging experience in Ghana.  Most Rev. ADDAI CUTLASS HONOURED BY PRESBY CHURCH

T he Ntribuoho Presbyterian Church under the Asante Presbytery has been officially named Paul Addai Memorial Congregation, after the late Kwadwo Addai, a renowned Ghanaian entrepreneur and philanthropist, popularly called Addai Cutlass.  This is the first time the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has accepted a proposal for the naming of one of its congregations after a Ghanaian indigene.  The initiative is to encourage members of the church not to relent in their efforts in contributing their quota towards the development of the local Presbyterian congregations.  The Asante Presbytery Chairperson of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Reverend Dr. Kofi Amfo Akonnor performed the dedication and naming of the chapel.  The Minister-in-charge of the Ntribuoho Presbyterian Church, now named Paul Addai Memorial Congregation, Rev. FMR ASH REG'L MINISTER LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR NHYIAESO SEAT

The Ashanti Regional Minister, John Alexander Ackon has made a case to residents of Nhyiaeso constituency in Kumasi explaining why the NDC Parliamentary candidate for the area, Dr. Samuel Sarpong deserves to be given the mandate to represent them in Parliament in the December 7 general elections.  Speaking at the launch of Dr. Sarpong’s election campaign at Patasi, Mr. Ackon said with the unprecedented developmental projects by President Mahama coupled with what Dr. Sarpong had also achieved as a former Ashanti Regional Minister and former Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, the work had been made easy and that the seat is Dr. Sarpong’s to win.  Mr. Ackon described as not sustainable, the claim by the New Patriotic Party that Ashanti Region and the Nhyiaeso Constituency were their stronghold and that the NDC would take it with ease.  Dr. Sarpong for his part, stated that he would spring a surprise by winning the Nhyiaeso parliamentary seat. NCDs POSE DANGER TO WORLD-W.H.O. PREDICTS

The Department of Health Statistics of the World Health Organization, WHO, has predicted that by 2030, about three-quarters of all deaths globally, will be caused by non-communicable diseases.  Already, the steady rise in the cases of non-communicable diseases is having a serious negative implication on the health sector and national productivity.  For instance, the recorded national cases of non-communicable diseases rose from 60 thousand in 1990 to 700 thousand in 2010 with hypertension alone remaining among the top five recorded sicknesses at both public and Christian health facilities over the years.  These statistics were revealed by the Acting Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences of the University of Ghana, Dr. Matilda Asante, in Kumasi at the Induction and Oath Swearing ceremony for 759 Allied Health Interns.  The new Allied Health professionals completed their three-year Diploma training in
