ABSENTEEISM AT 2015 WASSCE IN ASHANTI

Asection of the candidates writing the Integrated Science Paper 1 at the KNUST SHS Centre A total of 62 thousand, 472 candidates making up the highest regional figure in the ongoing West African Secondary Schools Certificate Examinations were expected to sit for the first compulsory Paper today.  However, the Ashanti Today's visit to some of the Examination Centres revealed that not all the candidates who registered for the examination were available for the Integrated Science Paper.  At the Kumasi High School Centre at Gyinyase, candidates from two schools, made up of the Kumasi High School itself and the Apostle Kwadwo Sarfo Senior High School had already started the Paper One at the time of the visit at about 9.15 am.  Out of the 547 all male candidates from KUHIS who were expected to be present, one was absent without any reason offered while one female candidate from the Apostle Kwadwo Sarfo SHS, Sylvia Baah Gyebi was also absent.  At the KNUST Senior

LADY JULIA ASSISTS SPECIAL SCHOOL, SUNTRESO HOSPITAL

Lady Julia(right) handing over the materials The Serwaa Ampem Foundation for Children, a subsidiary of the Otumfuo Charity Foundation, has presented assorted items valued at 16 thousand, 850 Ghana Cedis to two institutions in the Ashanti region in line with its social responsibility towards the vulnerable in society.  The beneficiary institutions are the Suntreso Government Hospital which received items such as mattresses, colour a television set, a refrigerator, dispensing and examination tables and playing materials to stock the newly constructed Children’s Ward.  The items were presented by the Chief Executive of the Serwaa Ampem Foundation for Children, Lady Julia Osei Tutu, who is also the wife of the Asantehene.  She explained that the donation is in response to a formal request made by officials of the Hospital for the assistance of the Foundation.  Lady Julia Osei Tutu, before the presentation, visited some of the Wards and interacted with, as we

NPP'S NEC MUST DO FURTHER CONSULTATION-AYISI BOATENG

A leading member of the NPP, George Ayisi Boateng, has called for broader consultations on the party’s proposal on affirmative action put forward by the National Executive Council of the party that has generated unpleasant reaction from members.  According to him, the reaction to the proposal by a section of the party members is not in the best interest of the party.  Reacting to the overreaction to the proposal in an interview with GBC's Garden City Radio in Kumasi, Mr. Ayisi Boateng called on members who are not in favour of the proposal to refrain from any act that is likely to undermine the chances of the party to recapture power next year.  He said the party has several other options apart from affirmative action in support of enticing more women to stand for the parliamentary elections.  Mr. Ayisi Boateng said the party should never sacrifice competence and capability on the altar of getting more women to contest on the party’s ticket to go to parliament

KUMASI PRISONS COMMOTION REPORT READY

A Committee appointed by the Minister of the Interior to investigate the causes of the fire outbreak resulting in a jail break at the Kumasi Central Prisons last month on Monday submitted its report to the Acting Ashanti Regional Minister, Eric Opoku.  The committee, chaired by the Ashanti Regional Crime Officer, Peter Baba was tasked to investigate the extent of damage caused by the fire outbreak, the jail break and suggest measures to curtail future occurrence.  The committee was given up to the 5 th of this month to submit its report but managed to finish the work three weeks after schedule.  In all, 43 witnesses including serving prison officers, remanded prisoners and convicts were interviewed.  The Acting Regional Minister, Eric Opoku thanked the committee for the work done and promised to submit the report to the Minister of the Interior by the close of the week.  It would be recalled that, on the 4 th of last month, fire broke out at the Kumasi Centr

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu has advised the media to be abreast of approved processes in the selection and enstoolment of chiefs and skins in order to bring social harmony in the country.  He said in as much as the media thrives on speed and accuracy in their reportage, there should not be any breach of disrespect to traditional laws, customs and processes by any journalist or media personnel, so an not to tarnish the honour and dignity of traditional authorities in the country.  It is therefore of utmost importance that journalists make the conscious effort to educate themselves on the various traditions and customs to better inform the public especially on chieftaincy matters either through news reportage or discussions on radio and television.  Otumfuo Osei Tutu gave the advice when he hosted the media in the Ashanti region to a reception at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.  He underscored the vital role of the media in covering events at the Manhyia Palace.
