The Acting Ashanti Regional Minister, Eric Opoku, took the salute from a contingent of one thousand, 678 officers and men of the various security services, students and pupils from public and private basic and second cycle schools, voluntary groups and school cadet corps in the regional commemoration of Ghana’s 58th Anniversary of Ghana’s political Independence at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi.

Mr. Opoku took the Independence Parade Salute as a result of the dismissal of the substantive Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and his Deputy, Joseph Yamin just last Wednesday for an unknown reason/s.

Flanking him on the dais were the Regional Director of Education, Kofi Sarfo Kantanka, heads of the security services among others.

In his address, the Acting Regional commended the chiefs and people of the Ashanti region for co-existing peacefully with all the residents in the pursuit of national development.

Mr. Opoku however expressed regret that with the passage of time, certain highly acclaimed Ghanaian values such as respect for each other and the elderly, dedication to duty, environmental cleanliness through communal labour and patriotism are fast giving way to the culture of impunity, particularly, disrespect for people in authority.

According to the Acting Regional Minister, individualistic tendencies as well as excessive partisanship are now the main causes of Ghana’s economic and social dislocation.

Mr. Opoku appealed to Ghanaians to soberly reflect and go back for the lost values including the spirit of nationalism while adopting positive attitudes required for a conducive national socio-economic transformation as captured in this year’ Independence celebration, which ‘Ghana at 58; Achieving Transformation through National Unity’.

Prizes were given to the best performing Public Junior High and Senior High Schools, the best performing private Junior High and Senior High Schools as well as the Best performing Youth Group.
