'NO VERIFICATION, NO VOTE' WILL APPLY-EC

As part of preparations toward the upcoming nationwide District Level Elections, the Ashanti regional directorate of the Electoral Commission has organized a sensitization workshop for civil society and community-based organizations operating in the Kumasi metropolis.

The workshop was to educate the participants on the electoral processes.

The beneficiary organizations included the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Center for the Development of People, CEDEP, Collation of Domestic Election Observers, CODEO, Christian Council of Ghana, Information Services Department and the National Commission on Civic Education.

In a presentation, the Director of Elections, Samuel Tettey indicated that, the ‘No Verification No Vote’ policy will apply in the up-coming District Level Elections which involve District Assembly and Unit Committees.

Also, two biometric devices would be brought to each polling station to facilitate the process.

Mr. Tettey urged election observers, not to limit themselves to only observing the actual elections but to cover other areas of the election like the multiple and the Exception Lists as well as the Voters Register.

Mr. Tettey asked anyone or group that wants to support any of the candidates in the upcoming elections to channel such assistance through the Electoral Commission as provided for in the law.

The Director of Elections entreated all persons desiring to be election observers to apply to the EC for an accreditation at a fee. He ceased the opportunity to remind the media to be abreast of terminologies relating to elections such as rigging, fraud, irregularities and cheating and use them appropriately in educating their audiences and readers.

The Ashanti Regional EC Director, Paul Boateng emphasized the need for all the stakeholders to work collectively to ensure success of the upcoming elections.

Mr. Boateng warned that nobody has the right to remove posters, even if they have been posted at the wrong places adding that any such complaints must be reported to the Police for the necessary actions to be taken to protect the peace in society.
