CAR SNATCHERS ARRESTED

    Two men aged 32 and 22 are in the grips of the Ankaase Police in the Kwabre district of Ashanti for violently snatching a taxi cab from its driver.  The suspects, Kwadwo Nkrumah and Akwasi Addai, were arrested by concerned residents of Adanwomase after laying ambush for the arrest.  Narrating the incident to Ashanti Today father of the driver of the taxi cab, Isaac Adu, said the two suspects, at about 10 pm   on Friday 22 nd of this month, hired an Opel taxi cab with registration AW 5771-14 driven by one Allen Adu Gyimah, from Agona with Aduman as the final destination.  However, on reaching a spot between Mpobi and Wawase in the Afigya Kwabere district, they pushed the driver out of the taxi after physically assaulting him.  They then sped off with the vehicle.  According to Mr. Adu, the driver later reported the incident to the Ankaase Police who issued him with an Extract for radio announcement while he sought medical attention at a nearby health Cen

LOTTO RETAILERS RAISE RED FLAG ABOUT ENGAGEMENT OF SIMNET

Members of the Ashanti Regional Lotto Marketing Companies and Retailers Association have expressed reservations about the re-engagement of Simnet Ghana Limited by the National Lottery Authority to provide online lottery services in the country.  According to the members, they are surprised by the news widely circulated in the national dailies that had sought to convince the Ghanaian public that the re-engagement of Simnet Ghana Limited is to the benefit of the National Lotteries Authority and the country at large.  Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, the secretary of the Regional branch of the Association, Kwarteng Amaniampong said members are of the opinion that the decision to allow Simnet Ghana Limited to provide services to the NLA is not in the best interest of lotto retailers and the country as a whole.  Mr. Amaniampong said the reason for expressing disapproval about the coming on board of Simnet Ghana Limited for the second time is the fact that the company

BOY, 15, TRAPPED TO DEATH BY FIRE

A 15-year old boy named only as Kwadwo, has been burnt to death in bush fire at Konkoma in the Bosomtwe district of Ashanti.  Two other boys of the same age were however able to escape but with severe body burns and are in critical conditions are currently receiving medical treatment at a local Clinic.  The Bosomtwe District Chief Executive, Madam Veronica Antwi Agyei, who confirmed this to Ashanti Toda y in Kumasi noted that the body of the deceased who is a son of the Constituency Organizer of the NDC, Alhaji Addai Minkah, has been deposited at the Saint Michael’s Catholic Hospital’s Mortuary at Pramso.  A consideration is being given for the transfer of the injured persons to the same Hospital for specialist care.  Madam Antwi Agyei explained that the deceased and the survivors last Wednesday were trying to quench wild fire that had engulfed the father’s cocoa farms at Konkoma.  They were trapped by the fire and but two of them managed to escape but Kwadwo

FIRST FOOD FRAUD CONFERENCE HELD AT KNUST

The First National Conference on Food Fraud has been held in Kumasi. It highlighted the dangers associated with food fraud, what the law says, and how food fraud can be checked by the consumer. The Regulatory Officer at the Food and Drugs Authority, P. A. Opoku explained that food fraud, also referred to as Economic Motivated Adulteration, as a collective term used to encompass the deliberate and intentional substitution, addition, tampering or misrepresentation of food, food ingredients, food packaging, or false and misleading statements made about a product for economic gain.  He said a major action that constitutes food fraud is adulteration, which means the food contains or bears unsafe, poisonous substances or had been prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions.  Another action is mis-branding which refers to foods being marketed as something they are not.  Mr. Opoku said though usually harmless, some food fraud incidents can result in serious public

MENINGITIS CLAIMS SIX LIVES IN ASHANTI

The Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr. Alexis Nang-Beifubah, has disclosed that six persons have so far died from other kinds of meningitis in the region.  According to him, the Regional Health Directorate received reports of such cases but after critical examination, nine tested positive whiles eight tested negative.  The Regional Health Director made this known at a media briefing in Kumasi today, Wednesday January 27.  According to Dr. Nang-Beifubah out of the nine positive cases, six persons lost their lives while three have been treated and discharged from the hospital.  He emphasized however that the disease is not linked to the deadly pneumococcal meningitis as recorded in the Brong Ahafo region.  He noted also that the disease in the region is not an outbreak and gave the assurance that the situation is under control.  Dr. Nang-Beifubah said o nly three of the cases belong to the group that caused the outbreak in the Brong Ahafo r egion.   The rest belong
