PRESIDENT'S DIRECTIVE HAILED
The Dean of
Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Ashanti region,
Kaakyire Oppong Kyekyeku, has described President John Mahama’s directive to MMDCEs
to defer their ongoing academic programmes as timely and must be adhered to by
all the MMDCEs involved.
According to him, the MMDCEs are at the beck and call
of the President on whose authority they are holding public office.
Speaking in
an interview with Ashanti Today in Kumasi, Mr. Oppong Kyekyeku noted also that the
President’s directive has come at a time that both the government and ruling
party are preparing feverishly towards this year’s Presidential and
Parliamentary polls considered as a make or break for any of the two major
political parties.
Mr. Oppong Kyekyeku, who is the Afigya Kwabre District Chief
Executive, said the directive does not imply a dereliction of duty on the part
of the MMDCEs concerned.
He explained "It is rather in recognition of the fact that the
government headed by President Mahama needs to work very hard to justify why
Ghanaians must retain it in power after the elections."
Mr. Oppong Kyekyeku
noted that this year’s elections will make history at all cost in Ghana’s democratic
dispensation for which reason the stakes are very high and that nothing should
be left to chance.
"The NDC could be the only political party to
win three successive national elections with President Mahama becoming the longest
serving President in the fourth Republic if the NDC wins the election", Mr. Oppong Kyekyeku emphasized.
On the other hand, Nana Akuffo Addo
stands to become the first opposition candidate to unseat a sitting President
in an election.
Mr. Oppong Kyekyeku therefore advised his colleague MMDCEs to
recognize the enormity of the electioneering and the need for all hands to be
on deck to secure victory for the President and the NDC during the polls.
