POLICE TARGET ABOBOYAA, MOTORBIKES IN KSI

The Manhyia Divisional Police Command in Kumasi in conjunction with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department today, Monday February 29,   impounded at least 21 motor tricycles popularly referred as Aboboyaa, 10 motorbikes and seven cars for various motor traffic offences.  The offences range from non-use of crash helmets, unlicensed tricycles to unregistered vehicles.  The Divisional Police Commander, ACP George Tweneboah told Ashanti Today that the exercise was organized within the Kumasi Zongo area, an area noted for motor traffic offences.  He said fatalities resulting from particularly motorbike accidents have been on the increase in the metropolis since the beginning of this year and of major concern has been the non-adherence to the use of crash helmets by the riders.  It is in this regard that the Manhyia Command has began an exercise to enforce road traffic regulations to reduce indiscipline on the streets of Kumasi especially by road users.  ACP Tw

PUPILS BURN CLASSROOMS, TEACHING AND LEARNING MATERIALS

Ashanti Today has gathered that two classrooms as well as some teaching and learning materials including a teacher’s desk have been burnt at the Mahaad Islamic Primary School at Moshie Zongo in Kumasi.  Two Class Four pupils of the school, whose names have been withheld for security reasons, are reported to have allegedly committed the act yesterday at about 7.30 pm.  A source who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident saying that a report had been made to the parents of one of the pupils who reside in Takoradi in the Western region by the school authority, of his undisciplined behavior in school.  This however did not go done well with the student, who was later alleged to have bought fuel and connived with his accomplice, another pupil of the school to set ablaze some desks and books in Classes Four and Six.  The pupils are allegedly reported to have scaled the locked gates of the fenced school at night.  According to the source, the two boys are currently in the custo

FULANIS IN REPRISAL ATTACK-AGOGO DCE SUSPECTS

The Asante Akyem North District Security Council is to petition the Ashanti Regional Security Council, REGSEC, to as a matter of urgency, provide the necessary support to the DISEC to effectively tackle what it considers as a new phenomenon of crime wave emerging within the Afram Plains portion of the district.  The DISEC suspects that some of the aggrieved nomadic herdsmen who have been driven out of the district in recent security operations are embarking on a suspected reprisal attack on the residents by killing and maiming them.  Speaking to Ashanti Today in Kumasi after an emergency DISEC meeting at Agogo today , Monday February 29 , the Chairman of the DISEC, Paul Averu, who is also the District Chief Executive, said the two latest murder cases recorded at Abrewanko, one of the communities in the Plains, has not been linked to activities of the cattle.  On the other hand, the unidentified assailants are believed to be Fulani herdsmen who at separate locations, d

KUGISS OLD STUDENTS ASSIST SCHOOL

The 1998 year group of the Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School has presented a one thousand, 555 capacity water storage tank to the school at a short ceremony.  The water storage tank, bought at a cost of 700 Ghana Cedis through the voluntary contribution of members of the group.  Making the presentation on behalf of the 1998 year group, a journalist, Beatrice Spio Garbrah explained that the gesture is part of the old students’ contribution towards addressing the perennial water supply challenge facing the school.  The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Margaret Mac Davis Asamoah, who received the donation, expressed gratitude to the 1998 batch of the old students saying that it will go a long way to help to address the water supply challenges the school has had to endure for many years now.  Mrs. Asamoah however appealed to other stakeholders of the school especially old students, to also contribute towards solving the many problems facing the school including a permanent resoluti

DON'T SENSATIONALIZE HEALTH ISSUES-HEALTH DIRECTOR WARNS MEDIA

The media have been urged to avoid sensationalism and present accurate information when reporting especially on the outbreak of diseases.  The Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr. Alexis Nang-Beifubah who gave the advice also appealed to the media to grant the health directorate some time to educate the public on critical health issues.  The Regional Health Director was addressing health officials from the 30 metropolitan, municipal and district Health directors as well as other health partners at the 2015 Annual Performance Review Meeting of the Ashanti Regional Health directorate in Kumasi.  Dr. Nang-Beifubah explained that although the media play a critical role in the overall health delivery value chain, the excesses in their reportage negatively affect the directorate’s information management on pertinent health issues such as disease outbreak.  Dr. Nang-Beifubah therefore urged the media to desist from sensationalizing health issues and rather focus on pu
