SENYA, BAFFOUR KESSE STILL UNCOMPROMISING

For the fourth time, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, has failed to elect its Presiding Member.

At an extraordinary meeting held in Kumasi today, Wednesday February 3, for the sole agenda of the election of a Presiding Member, the two contenders for the post were tied at 67 votes against the minimum two-thirds majority votes.

The contenders, who incidentally are both former holders of the same post, are the Adumhene, Baffour Agyei Kesse, and Nana Kofi Senya.

Baffour Agyei Kesse is a government appointee representing the Manhyia Palace as a traditional authority, while Nana Kofi Senya is an elected Assembly Member for New Suame.

Five members of the Assembly initially put themselves up for the election.

However, after the first round of the polls organized immediately after the swearing in of the reconstituted Assembly, the three contestants who had the least votes stepped down leaving Baffour Agyei Kesse and Nana Kofi Senya to slot it out.

The eventual winner must by law, get about 92 votes of the 136-member Assembly. Today’s election was supervised by the Ashanti Regional Director of the EC, Paul Boateng.

At the end of the polls, each of the two contestants had 67 of the votes cast.

The outcome leaves concerned residents in the Kumasi metropolis and members of the Assembly wondering as to when the stalemate could be broken to ensure the highest political authority in the metropolis takes full responsibility for the city’s socio-economic development especially as the two contenders appear uncompromising.

Kumasi is currently grappling with a very serious congestion at the business centre where traders have totally taken over some of the lanes of roads while the overhead pedestrians footbridge has been taken over by sellers thereby rendering human and vehicular movement extremely difficult.

The deadlock in the selection of a Presiding Member is being blamed squarely on the partisan political posture taken by the sides involved.

The KMA regulates business, commerce and social activities in Kumasi. Without a Presiding Member, the Assembly has not been able to constitute its Sub-Committees to perform various activities.

In the absence of a substantive Presiding Member, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Michael Ataogye has been acting as the Presiding Member.
