ACKON DRILLED

The Ashanti Regional Minister-designate, John Alexander Ackon, has taken his turn at the vetting of Ministerial-nominees by the Appointments Committee of Parliament in Accra today, Monday, February 8.

Mr. Ackon who is currently a Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, answered a variety of questions ranging from his educational, professional, social, religious and political development as well as development of the Ashanti region.

The nominee until his nomination by President John Mahama as the Ashanti Regional Minister served as the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs and also spent one month as a Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister.

Touching on social economic development of the Ashanti region, Mr. Ackon explained that per their Instruments of Appointment, Deputy Ministers are supposed to support substantive Ministers of State to deliver specific policy and social projects and programmes.

He noted that even though the MPs Common Fund is meant for specific purposes, it will not be out of place for an MP to spend part of the fund to support cultural and traditional programmes and activities such as festivals.

Mr. Ackon admitted that Ashanti region is largely defined by culture, hence the need for political appointees to respect and peacefully co-exist with the traditional authority.

Touching on the dreaded illegal mining, the Regional Minister-designate emphasized the fact that stopping the social canker must be seen as a collective responsibility of all stakeholders.

Mr. Ackon stressed that in finding a lasting solution to the menace, the law will be applied on the illegal miners without fear or favour.
