KUMASI TRADITIONAL COUNCIL UNSATISFIED WITH PEACE MOVES

The Kumasi Traditional Council has met with the Ashanti Regional Security Council, REGSEC at its meeting at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to learn from the REGSEC what actually caused last week’s violence at Tafo in the Kumasi metropolis.

The violence resulted in the death of one person and extensive destruction to both public and private properties whose cost runs into thousands of Ghana Cedis.

The Kumasi Traditional Council meeting was chaired by the Asokore Mamponghene while the Chairman of the REGSEC, Peter Anarfi-Mensah who is the outgoing Ashanti Regional Minister, led the REGSEC.

A source at the meeting told Ashanti Today that the Traditional Council expressed reservations about the unconditional release of the 48 suspects who were arrested by the security operatives for their unspecified roles in the conflict.

It said members of the Traditional Council urged the REGSEC to ensure that the perpetrators are made to face the law to deter others from initiating similar problems in future.

Again, the security operatives, especially the Police, were reprimanded by some members of the Council for their failure to make any arrest in the heat of the violence even though their personnel were right at the scene.

In the view of the Kumasi Traditional Council, there can only be absolute peace in society when justice is enforce while all sides to an issue are treated fairly.

The Traditional Council was not happy about the lack of a representation of the chieftaincy on the said Committee.

Meanwhile, the Kumasi Traditional Council is to meet again next Tuesday to consider the same Tafo issue during which the leadership of the Tafo Zongo and Muslims Community are billed to tell their side of the story.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, Professor Seth Opuni Asiamah, has told Ashanti Today that the Peace Council will attend next Tuesday’s Manhyia meeting.

The outcome of the meeting will then enable the Peace Council to take the next appropriate step towards dousing any lingering issues that could rekindle the security problem at Tafo.
