COCOA REHABILITATION PROGRAMME ON PILOT IN A/R

Solidaridad West Africa, an international non-governmental organization concerned with improved and increased agricultural productivity initiatives in the West Africa sub-region, has embarked on a field trip to assess progress of its ongoing Cocoa Rehabilitation and Intensification Programme at two project sites at New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region and Assin Fosu in the Central region.  The Cocoa Rehabilitation and Intensification Programme for Ghana, CORIP-Ghana, is a four-year project which was rolled out in 2013 with the objective of contributing towards the intensification of cocoa production systems in Ghana to further translate into sustainable productivity enhancement and economic returns for cocoa farmers.   Correspondent Enoch Kofi Saarkwah has the rest of the story.     The 20 million Euros programme is being coordinated by Solidaridad West Africa in partnership with the International Fertilizer Development Company, IFDC, Ghana Cocoa Board and seven local and intern

MAN JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED ABORTION

A farmer, Osman Mahamudu has been sentenced to twelve months imprisonment in hard labour by the Asokwa Magistrate Court in Kumasi for attempting to abort the pregnancy of his young sister-in-law of which he was responsible.  He is also to pay one thousand Ghana Cedis as compensation to the victim, Ama Issaka in addition of paying all hospital bills.  He is to sign a bond of good behaviour after serving his sentence.  The Prosecution told the court presided over by Owusu Achiaaw Korkor, that Osman lived with his wife and the sister-in-law Ama Issaka at Esereso in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti.  According to the Prosecution, Osman had been engaging in sexual intercourse with Ama for the past one year, without the knowledge of his wife.  He later impregnated Ama and decided to abort the pregnancy through the administering of a concoction.  This however resulted in complications and Ama had to be hospitalized for three weeks after which she was discharged.  On the 23 rd

POULTRY SECTOR RECEIVES $57M BOOST

The United States Department of Agriculture, USDA is investing 57 million Dollars under a Food for Progress Initiative to enhance the value chain in Ghana’s Poultry farming industry.   The USDA-sponsored Ghana Poultry Project is being implemented over a five year period to increase the competitiveness of the domestic production and processing of poultry meat through capacity building and boost the trade of poultry products by improving product quality, increasing production efficiency, and improving market linkages.    It will focus on addressing post-harvest handling deficiencies and improving quality of feed and demonstrating to farmers on what using quality feed can do for them.    At the launch of a Field Survey of Baseline studies for the Ghana Poultry Project in Kumasi, the Senior Research Fellow of the Bureau of Integrated Rural Development at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Dr. Paul Sarfo Mensah explained that the project will improve e

KEJETIA STORES NOT YET ALLOTED-KOJO BONSU

A group of Assembly members have accused the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu and his aide of allocating some 20 thousand stores at the ongoing Kejetia Lorry Terminal redevelopment project to some market women at the cost of 25 thousand Ghana Cedis.  However, a recent visit to the site by a cross-section of journalists in Kumasi and some of the relocated traders has revealed that no stores have been built at the terminal.  Currently, contractors executing the project are polishing the floors on which the stores will be erected. UPGRADE FIRE SERVICE TO COMMISSION-DAASEBRE OSEI BONSU

The Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, Daasebre Osei Bonsu has called on the government to upgrade the Ghana National Fire Service to a Commission status, for it to conform to the dynamics of firefighting and rescue operations.  In his view, a National Fire Commission will not only be independent taking certain critical decisions in the spur of the moment in response to emergencies, but will also receive the required national support in terms of resources to perform optimally.  Daasebre Osei Bonsu, who is also the 2 nd in command in the hierarchy of Asanteman as Mamponghene, as well as a member of the Standing Committee of the National House of Chiefs, made the call at Asante Mampong when the Chief Fire Officer, Dr. Albert Brown Gaisie, paid a courtesy call on him.  Daasebre Osei Bonsu noted that new challenges such as urbanization and technology are emerging and posing serious threat to human safety and security.  These require that the natio
