FISHERIES MINISTRY INITIATES MOVES TO CONSERVE LAKE BOSOMTWE
A stakeholders’
meeting has taken place at Abono in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti on the
implementation of a sustainable management and conservation programme of Lake
Bosomtwe to be implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture
Development.
It was attended by fisher folks living in the cluster of communities
around Lake Bosomtwe and staff of the Fisheries Commission.
The objective of
the meeting was to inform key stakeholders on the three main activities to be
undertaken to ensure sustainable management of the resource.
These are
alternative livelihood, vigorous tree planting and increasing fish stock in the
lake.
The Director of Fish Health, Dr. Joyce Dontwi noted that in the past,
traditional laws had helped to prevent the over-exploitation of resources in
the lake and its catchments, which subsequently ensured sustainable fish
productivity on the lake.
However, pollution of the lake and the degradation of
the forests in the catchment area have undermined the integrity of the lake.
She said the main value of the programme to be implemented by the Ministry of
Fisheries and Aquaculture Development is to preserve both the cultural and
natural heritages of Lake Bosomtwe for the nation’s socio-economic development.
The Ashanti Regional Director of Fisheries, Gideon Boakye said fish stocks in
Lake Bosomtwe have dwindled drastically attributing the problem to the use of
undersized nets in fishing, which destroy breed stocks.
He said experts would
be engaged to take samples of fish species from the lake or reproduction by
which the fingerlings would be used to refill the lake and sustain its
lifespan.
Mr. Boakye explained that the move is to improve upon and sustain the
fishing industry.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development would
further introduce concrete tanks and ponds under aquaculture in the Lake District.
The District Chief Executive, Veronica Antwi Agyei described as welcome news
the move by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development to protect
and sustain the lake.
