NMC LAUNCHES ELECTIONS PROJECT IN KSI
The National Media Commission has launched the “Election Project” in the Ashanti Region on the theme, “Improving Media Regulation In The Regions For Peaceful Election 2016”.
At
the ceremony in Kumasi, the Chairman of the NMC Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, said the Election
Project is to ensure that the media play their part to ensure peaceful general
elections.
He noted that in order for the media to be cited as the reason for
peaceful and successful elections in the country, they must be abreast of their
duties such as public education on the voting process and providing platforms
for all political parties and independent candidates to convey their messages
to the citizenry.
He was however quick to add that while performing these
duties, they must bear in mind the ethics of the profession by especially being
fair to all sides on an issue.
He advised the media not to allow politicians to
use their platforms to propagate politics of ethnicity and tribalism, but must
ensure issues discussed are of national importance.
Mr. Gyan-Apenteng explained
that the Ashanti Regional Media Advisory Committee would monitor the media
landscape in the region and will commend or chastise media organizations when
appropriate.
Mr. Gyan-Apenteng tasked all stakeholders in the conduct of
elections to be professional to ensure peace before, during and after the polls.
The Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong also advised the media to be
mindful of how they present messages to the public, as negligence on their part
could lead to serious consequences for the country.
He called on political
parties and the media to channel their grievances to the Regional Media Advisory
Committee for amicable resolution and also ensure peace as the country enters
into the election season.
