KEJETIA STORES NOT YET ALLOTED-KOJO BONSU
A group of Assembly members have accused the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu and his aide of allocating some 20 thousand stores at the ongoing Kejetia Lorry Terminal redevelopment project to some market women at the cost of 25 thousand Ghana Cedis.
However, a
recent visit to the site by a cross-section of journalists in Kumasi and some
of the relocated traders has revealed that no stores have been built at the
terminal.
Currently, contractors executing the project are polishing the floors
on which the stores will be erected.
The Kejetia Lorry Terminal redevelopment
project forms the first phase of the holistic Kumasi Central Market
redevelopment project.
On completion, the new two-storey Kejetia Terminal will
have modern facilities including lorry terminal at the ground floor, about 20
thousand shops and stores and ancillary facilities.
The Yam Queen at the Kumasi
Central Market, Nana Yaa Foriwa, who was present at the site, condemned the
politicization of the Kejetia project and asked residents of Kumasi to discard
rumors that tend to sow confusion among various trading groups who were
affected by the relocation.
The Chairman of the Central Market Committee,
Daniel Ankomah called on those who claim to have made any payment for the
allocation of stores at the new Kejetia Lorry Terminal to show proof of such a
transaction.
He emphasized that biometric registration of the traders are still
ongoing.
It is therefore erroneous and misleading for anyone to claim that he
or she has been allocated a store at the yet to complete Kejetia Lorry Terminal
Project.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu described the
accusation of extortion of 25 thousand Ghana Cedis each from some market women
for store allocation in the ongoing Central Market-Kejetia project as false,
saying, it was engineered to tarnish his hard-won image in the Ashanti Region.
He
said there is no way he could allocate those stores when the Assembly has not
reached the allocation stage.
Mr. Bonsu has thrown an invitation to anyone who
has any information about any alleged payment to come forward and assist with
investigation.
