UPGRADE FIRE SERVICE TO COMMISSION-DAASEBRE OSEI BONSU
The Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, Daasebre Osei Bonsu has called on the government to upgrade the Ghana National Fire Service to a Commission status, for it to conform to the dynamics of firefighting and rescue operations.
In his view, a National Fire Commission will not only be
independent taking certain critical decisions in the spur of the moment in
response to emergencies, but will also receive the required national support in
terms of resources to perform optimally.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu, who is also the 2nd
in command in the hierarchy of Asanteman as Mamponghene, as well as a member of
the Standing Committee of the National House of Chiefs, made the call at Asante
Mampong when the Chief Fire Officer, Dr. Albert Brown Gaisie, paid a courtesy
call on him.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu noted that new challenges such as urbanization
and technology are emerging and posing serious threat to human safety and
security.
These require that the nation adopts different approaches to
firefighting and rescue operations to meet the changing times.
Daasebre Osei
Bonsu noted with satisfaction the critical role the Fire Service has been
playing during emergencies in the country, despite its limitations in terms of
the number of its human resource strength and logistical base.
Daasebre Osei
Bonsu expressed worry about recent spate of wildfires in the Ashanti region
that have claimed many human lives including the one at Worakose, a suburb of
Mampong.
He attributed some of the causes to low public awareness about fire
safety measures, for which reason most landlords and landladies focus much
attention on protecting their properties against armed robbers at the peril of
human safety.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu urged both traditional and religious leaders
to join the GNFS in its public education campaign on fire safety practices so
as to protect human lives and property.
The Chief Fire Officer, Dr. Albert
Brown Gaisie disclosed that lands have been acquired at Ejura and Tepa in the
Ashanti region and Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo region for the
establishment of a Fire Service Command and Staff Academy, Fire Volunteers and
Traditional Training School as well as a Northern Command Academy to train
staff, fire volunteers and traditional leaders on effective firefighting and
rescue operations.
