TAFO VIOLENCE IS PURELY LAND ISSUE-NPC
The Ashanti Regional Peace Council has made
a passionate appeal to all to stay away from tendencies that could degenerate the
violence at Tafo in Kumasi into a religious or sectional conflict.
According to
the Council, the basis of last Wednesday’s violence is purely about a piece of
land at the Tafo cemetery and must be strictly considered as such, without any
other considerations.
Speaking to Ashanti Today the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, Professor Seth
Opuni Asiamah described as unfortunate the destruction of some church properties
and a mosque within the Tafo township which had nothing to do with the issue at
stake.
According to Professor Asiamah, it is very important for all the
interested parties to try as much as possible to localize the impasse within
Tafo devoid of religious, political or sectional sentiments so as to help
facilitate the peace process.
He said the Peace Council has already initiated
steps towards the restoration of peace and security in the town. '
The Regional NPC
Chairman disclosed that members of the Council met with the leadership of the
Muslim community and Zongo youth at Asawase yesterday, February 11, as part of the peace restoration
process.
Present at the meeting was the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Mumin
Haroun and some of the elders.
Professor Asiamah expressed satisfaction with
the response and demeanour of the people present to the dialogue, saying that
they have all shown goodwill to ending the crisis at Tafo.
He said the Council
will today visit the chief of Tafo, Nana Agyen Frimpong at his Palace to
further the dialogue to restore peace in the township.
Professor Asiamah
expressed high optimism about that peace is very much in sight and would be
restored very soon.
Meanwhile, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Sharubutu,
has already arrived in Kumasi.
Sheikh Osman Sharubutu is scheduled to join the
Muslim community at the Kumasi Central Mosque at Asawase for the Friday
afternoon prayers, after which he is expected to pay a courtesy call on Nana
Agyen Frimpong at the Tafo Palace in connection with last Wednesday’s conflict
in that town and how to restore peace and security there.
