KSI ZOO'S SREVENUE DROPS BY 50% DUE TO KEJETIA RECONSTRUCTION

Management of the Kumasi Zoo has appealed to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to impress upon contractors executing the Kejetia Lorry Terminal to create alternative entry and exit points at the Zoo to encourage patronage of the public facility.

The appeal follows a significant reduction in both public patronage and revenue of the Zoo since its main entrance was sealed off last July to facilitate construction of the new Kejetia Terminal.

Speaking to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, the Manager of the Kumasi Zoo, Stephen Tamanja disclosed that the revenue generated by the Zoo from visitors has reduced by about 50 per cent since the closure of the main entrance about eight months ago.

He noted regrettably that the contractors however failed to provide an alternative entry point saying that even a formal complaint to the KMA has not yielded the required response.

As a result, most people think the Zoo has either been closed down or relocated.

According to Mr. Tamanja, the few visitors who wish to patronize it are also confused about the availability of a car parking space since the existing one is at the main entrance which is no more accessible.

The Zoo’s Manager noted that even though the management has been forced to create an improvised entry point, it is not enough to attract the number of visitors who used to patronize it.

Mr. Tamanja explained that the Kumasi Zoo is the major one of its kind in the country following the relocation of the Accra one to make way for the FlagStaff House.

He described as a wrong impression held by the public that the Zoo serves only recreational purpose adding that "it has economic, educational, research and wildlife preservation importance to the society."

It is for this reason why the authorities must give serious attention to the needs of the facility.
