KONONGO HIT BY ACUTE WATER SHORTAGE

Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited says there is very little the company can do about the acute water shortage that has hit residents of Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality.

People in the Municipality are facing severe shortage of potable water.

For some weeks now, the residents have resorted to any available source of water for their livelihood as a result of the reduced inflow of water into the Municipality’s main source of water.

Speaking to Ashanti Today  in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Communications Manager of GWCL, Sampson Ampah said the water shortage is due to a natural cause which the company has no control of.

Mr. Ampah emphasized that the problem is not new as it has become an annual canker occurring during every dry season when rains subside.

What GWCL has done is to first educate the people on the annual problem and also ration the little water available from the booster station at Konongo.

Mr. Ampah said the company is waiting for the rainy season to start so as to get increased raw water from the Enuno river for processing into potable water for supply to its operational areas.

He said however, that the problem will permanently be resolved this year upon completion of the Three ‘K’ water project being constructed at Kumawu in the Sekyere Kumawu district.

The project, Kumawu, Konongo and Kwahu Water project, was scheduled for completion last year.

However, it has had to be delayed for an unknown reason with the end of this year being the new deadline for completion.

On completion, the project will supply pipe-borne water to hundreds of people living in and around the three main towns, including Konongo.
