MENINGITIS CLAIMS SIX LIVES IN ASHANTI

The Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr. Alexis Nang-Beifubah, has disclosed that six persons have so far died from other kinds of meningitis in the region.

According to him, the Regional Health Directorate received reports of such cases but after critical examination, nine tested positive whiles eight tested negative.

The Regional Health Director made this known at a media briefing in Kumasi today, Wednesday January 27.

According to Dr. Nang-Beifubah out of the nine positive cases, six persons lost their lives while three have been treated and discharged from the hospital.

He emphasized however that the disease is not linked to the deadly pneumococcal meningitis as recorded in the Brong Ahafo region.

He noted also that the disease in the region is not an outbreak and gave the assurance that the situation is under control.

Dr. Nang-Beifubah said only three of the cases belong to the group that caused the outbreak in the Brong Ahafo region.

The rest belong to another group saying that the causal agents are two different types of bacteria.

Dr. Nang-Beifubah mentioned Ahafo Ano South, Offinso municipal, Offinso North, Ejisu Juaben Municipality, Adansi North, Afigya Kwabre, Ejura Sekyedumasi, Adansi South district and Kumasi Metropolis as some of the administrative areas where the disease has been recorded.

Dr. Nang-Beifubah said the Health directorate is on the lookout and watching closely and will inform members of the public when the need arises.

He advised people to drink a lot of water and avoid overcrowding.
