LOTTO RETAILERS RAISE RED FLAG ABOUT ENGAGEMENT OF SIMNET
Members of the Ashanti Regional Lotto Marketing Companies and Retailers Association have expressed reservations about the re-engagement of Simnet Ghana Limited by the National Lottery Authority to provide online lottery services in the country.
According to the members, they
are surprised by
the news widely circulated in the national dailies that had sought to convince
the Ghanaian public that the re-engagement of Simnet Ghana Limited is to the
benefit of the National Lotteries Authority and the country at large.
Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, the secretary of the Regional branch of
the Association, Kwarteng Amaniampong said members are of the opinion that the
decision to allow Simnet Ghana Limited to provide services to the NLA is not in
the best interest of lotto retailers and the country as a whole.
Mr.
Amaniampong said the reason for expressing disapproval about the coming on
board of Simnet Ghana Limited for the second time is the fact that the company
has proven to be an unreliable business partner.
He also accused the NLA of
putting out a narrative that sought to portray Simnet Ghana Limited as a
company interested in the progress of the country when a little over three
years ago, it shut down services after a legal battle with the NLA, leaving the
lottery sector in disarray.
Mr. Amaniampong said but for the ability of another
service provider to quickly fill in the vacuum, the lottery sector would have
been in a sorry state.
He said shortly before Simnet withdrew its services,
majority of the lotto retailers had deposited huge sums of monies with the
company for the provision of credits in the point of sale devices they are
currently using for the electronic sale of lotto.
However, for three years now,
the company has not released the monies to them.
This obviously has affected some
members and left them at the mercy of creditors and bankers.
Mr. Amaniampong
said the lotto retailers are therefore not prepared to patronize the services
of Simnet Ghana Limited.
