OPERATION ‘COW LEG NOW STARTS’-REGIONAL MINISTER

The National Security
Secretariat has released funds to the Ashanti Regional Security Council,
REGSEC to carry out the planned ‘Operation Cow Leg’ to eventually flush out the
nomadic herdsmen and the cattle from the Asante Akyem North district of the
Ashanti region.
Operation Cow Leg which is expected to start next week, aims to
finally eject the nomads and their destructive cattle from the Afram Plains
portion of the district to bring about lasting peace, safety and security to the
area for the citizens go about their lawful activities without fear of attack.
The Ashanti Regional
Minister, Samuel Sarpong made this known in Kumasi while addressing students
and staff of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College to mark the start
of the five-day study tour of the region.
The Ashanti region is not only the
most populous administrative region of Ghana, but also a major economic
centre in terms of trade, commerce, agricultural production as well as
the hub of culture and tradition in the Ghana.
These attributes make the
region one of the most suitable areas for academic study for tertiary
students.
It is therefore no surprising that students of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and
Staff College continue to
select the region for their study in line with their academic requirements.
The
delegation, under the leadership of the Assistant Commandant of the College J.O.
Kontor, comprises 14 staff members and 50 students including one Nigerian.
The
interest areas of the delegation include the galamsey operations, Fulani herdsmen
menace, the Suame Light Industrial area and its prospect for the national
economy, youth unemployment and the civilian-military relations.
They will
visit Afram Plains in the Asante Akyem North district, areas ravaged by
galamsey activities, the Manhyia Palace and the Suame Light Industrial area to
have a first hand information about the situations there.
They will later each
write a report for presentation as part of their academic requirements and later
forwarded to the government copies of their findings for nation action.
At the
start of the study tour, they met and interacted with the staff of the Ashanti
Regional Coordinating Council headed by the Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel
Sarpong.
They were taken through the profile of the region, security
challenges with the problems posed by galamsey activities and Fulani nomads featuring prominently.
The
Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Sarpong, who is
also Chairman of the Regional Security Council, disclosed that funds
have now been secured from the National Security Secretariat and that the
REGSEC will very soon launch its ‘Operation Cow Leg’ to eventually flush out
the Fulani herdsmen and their cattle from the Asante Akyem North district to
bring about lasting peace and security in the area.
In a remark, the Leader of
the delegation, Assistant Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff
College J.O. Kontor, commended the
Ashanti REGSEC for working very hard to address the issues that are creating security problems in the region.
