GOV'T. SECURES FUNDS FOR REP II

Mr. Fifi Kwetey-MOFA Minister
The Government has received funding from the African Development Bank to finance phase two of the Rural Enterprises Programme.

This phase of the Rural Enterprises Programme is help improve the livelihoods of rural micro and small scale entrepreneurs and to increase the number of small scale enterprises that generate profits, growth and employment opportunities.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Fiffi Kwetey who announced this said Government is also strengthening farm institutes to deliver intensive training modules in farm business, while start-up capital and kits are being provided for the

establishment of six thousand farm- based and agro-processing businesses.

These were contained in an address read on his behalf at the 34th Annual Conference, Exhibition and Games of the country’s Agricultural Colleges at Ejura in Ashanti.

It was under the theme, “Empowering Agricultural Students For Greater Opportunities, Job Creation and Self-Employment”.

Mr. Kwetey said a number of interventions have been put in place by Government to create employment opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth.

Also, the Youth Enterprise Support programme, under the office of the President, was launched last year with the mission to provide various forms of support to Ghanaian youth in line with the government’s job creation initiatives.

Mr. Kwetey underscored the need for tertiary education graduates to enter the open job market to compete for the available job opportunities.

It is in this respect that entrepreneurship has been incorporated into the curriculum of the Agricultural colleges.

The Ejura Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Mohammed Bawa Braimah said the youth of today have a negative perception that farming is for the uneducated and the unskilled.

This perception, he said must be dispelled, because modern agriculture offers diverse career opportunities in the areas of research, the environment, financial management and engineering for the youth to explore.

The President of the Agricultural Colleges Students Union, Fofie Nelson Mandela mentioned the delays in the payment of trainee allowance and unemployment for graduates as among major challenges confronting members.
