KUMASI PRISONS COMMOTION REPORT READY

A Committee appointed by the Minister of the Interior to investigate the causes of the fire outbreak resulting in a jail break at the Kumasi Central Prisons last month on Monday submitted its report to the Acting Ashanti Regional Minister, Eric Opoku.

The committee, chaired by the Ashanti Regional Crime Officer, Peter Baba was tasked to investigate the extent of damage caused by the fire outbreak, the jail break and suggest measures to curtail future occurrence.

The committee was given up to the 5th of this month to submit its report but managed to finish the work three weeks after schedule.

In all, 43 witnesses including serving prison officers, remanded prisoners and convicts were interviewed.

The Acting Regional Minister, Eric Opoku thanked the committee for the work done and promised to submit the report to the Minister of the Interior by the close of the week.

It would be recalled that, on the 4th of last month, fire broke out at the Kumasi Central Prisons, leading to an attempted jail break.

A remanded prisoner died in the process, while several other prisoners and prison officers got injured.

A combined team of security officers including the military and the police helped to curtail the riot to save life and property.
