PRESBY MARK YOUTH AND STUDENTS WEEK AGAINST CORRUPTION
The youth and students of the Presbyterian
Church of Ghana have been advised to desist from any acts of corruption in their
endeavours.
This is because such acts negatively affect the growth of the church
and the society as a whole.
The Headmaster of the Danyame Cluster of Schools in
Kumasi, Asante Bekoe, gave the advice at a talk show of the Mount Sinai
Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana as part of the Youth and
Students Week celebration on the theme: “Corruption, Effects: Encountering the
Pentecostal Fire As Indispensable
Partner in Ministry”.
According to Mr. Bekoe, even though corruption and bribery
are bedfellows, there is a slight difference between the two.
He mentioned extortion,
nepotism, embezzlement as well as kick back as some forms of corruption.
Mr. Bekoe
explained that in spite of the fact that corruption exists also in developed
countries, the canker is more talked about in sub-Saharan African countries
such as Ghana because of its prevalence in society.
Mr. Bekoe enumerated psychological traits,
weak judicial system, selfishness, greed and power as being among the main
causes of corruption with poverty, perversion of justice, sexual abuse, misuse
of power as well as increase in unemployment as some of its attendant negative
effects on national socio-economic development.
He urged the youth to adopt positive
attributes such as the fear of God while availing themselves for the Holy
Spirit to use them so as to make positive change and impact on the larger
society.
Amongst the activities to mark the occasion are prayer conference,
praise, adoration and drama night as well as clean up exercise.
