AFRICAN RULING/OPPOSITION PARTIES RIG ELECTIONS-CATH ARCHBISHOP
The Vice President of the Pontifical Council on Peace and Justice in Africa, Most Reverend Gabriel Justice Anokye, has deplored what he calls real electoral fraud by both ruling and opposition political parties during elections in certain African countries.
According to him, some of the politicians involved
confess their nefarious deals and later attribute their victories to God.
Most
Rev. Anokye, who has already toured 21 of the African countries including those
who have gone to the polls in the last four years, however stated that he is
yet to have evidence of election rigging experience in Ghana.
Most Rev. Anokye,
who is also the Kumasi Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop, made this known while
preaching at a Mass to climax the 50th anniversary celebration of
the Saint Peter’s Parish at Asuoyeboa in Kumasi.
The Golden Jubilee, which was
on the theme: “The Development of St.
Peter’s Catholic Church, Asuyeboa for the New Evangelization: The Role of the
Parishioner”, was also used to dedicate the 600-seater church auditorium and
its alter.
The Asuoyeboa St. Peter’s Parish held its first Mass on 22nd
October, 1966 when 12 members were baptized with Rev. Father Leo Bekeman as the
first Priest in charge.
At the Golden Jubilee Mass was the Confirmation of 18
members into the Catholic faith while many others including the founding
members were presented with gifts.
Most Rev. Anokye expressed serious worry
about what he described as the politics without principles and also without the
fear of God in Ghana in particular and Africa in general.
It is for this
phenomenon that greed for wealth, corruption and mismanagement of scarce
national resources remain prevalent on the continent while the people remain
impoverished.
He lamented about the increasing menace of illegal gold mining by
both citizens and expatriates leading to the collapse of Anglogold Obuasi Mines
for which about two-thirds of the nearly 15 thousand workers have been retrenched
while the natural environment is being destroyed without concern for the future
generation.
Most Rev. Anokye again expressed worry about religious
commercialization by which some ministers of God are taking advantage of their
congregation who approach them for solutions to their afflictions.
He also chastised
Christians who patronize the activities of such men of God rather than
remaining steadfast in their faith in God.
