K'POLY RECONNECTED TO NATIONAL GRID

The Electricity Company of Ghana has restored power supply to the Kumasi Polytechnic.

The restoration, which was carried out last Monday, followed a complaint the school’s authorities lodged with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, PURC, against the power distributor for an unfair treatment against the Polytechnic.

The PURC then ordered an immediate reconnection of the school to the National Grid.

Speaking to Ashanti Today, the Assistant Registrar of the Polytechnic in charge of Public Relations, Robert Gyau, said the National Council for Tertiary Education, which oversees all tertiary schools in the country, has also been notified about the earlier action by the ECG that interrupted activities on the campus.

Mr. Gyau said the Council has assured that nothing has so far changed about the original arrangement where government takes up the utility bills of tertiary schools.

The PRO dispelled speculations in the media that utility bills form a component of the school fees of students and that the authorities of the Polytechnic has deliberately refused to remit that component of the fees to settle the electricity bills.

Mr. Gyau emphasized that payment of utility bills for the tertiary institutions has always been the responsibility of government, saying that no student is billed for the utility consumed, since that could unnecessarily increase school fees to bring untold hardship on both parents and students.
