VOTERS REGISTER EXHIBITION ACHIEVED MODEST SUCCESS-EC DEP. DIR.

The Ashanti Regional Deputy Director of the Electoral Commission, Lawrence Sarpong has observed that the just-ended seven-day achieved a modest success, even though the actual report on the exercise in the region is yet to be received from the various District offices of the Commission.

He explained that the aim for the Voters Register was not only to encourage registered voters to verify and correct their particulars as captured in the register, but also to create an avenue to clean it of ineligible names.

These include the personal details of dead voters, minors or non-citizens so as to enhance the credibility of the register for future national elections.

Speaking to Ashanti Today, Mr. Sarpong admitted that in spite of the low patronage by registered voters, some of the names have been transferred to the Exclusion List which involves the details of people suspected to have indulged in double registration, suspected minors and dead ones.

According to him, however, such names can only be perpetually deleted from the voter’s registration list if the Magistrate Court affirms it.

The Deputy Regional EC Director disagreed with certain opinions that attribute the low patronage at the exercise to insufficient publicity.

Mr. Sarpong was convinced that many people were indifferent, even though they were aware of the exercise and its importance; they were complacent that once they were able to cast their votes in the 2012 Parliamentary and Presidential elections, all was well with their particulars in the register.

Mr. Sarpong partly blamed the political parties in the region for not coming out to whip up their members and sympathizers’ interest.

A member of the NDC, Osman Baba Yahya disclosed that the Exhibition Officer detailed to his area did not show up on the first day of the exercise. He however did not blame the Electoral Commission for the low patronage.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Regional Director of the EC has hinted that the District Assemblies elections to reconstitute the metropolitan, municipal and district Assemblies is likely to be organized in the first quarter of next year, considering the fact that the tenure of the current Assemblies will expire within that period.

On the Referendum, Mr. Sarpong said much of it depends on the Constitution Review Implementation Committee.
