UEW L 200 STUDENT, 7 OTHERS KILLED IN ACCIDENT



  Eight persons were killed, four of them on the spot, in an accident at Sofoline, a suburb of Kumasi last night. 

Five others sustained various degrees of injuries with one of them said to be critical and on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital receiving medical attention. 

The Commanding Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Suntreso District Police in Kumasi, ASP Edmund Jones Afutu, who confirmed this to Ashanti Today, disclosed also that the dead include one woman who incidentally is a Level 200 female student of the Kumasi Campus of the University of Education who was returning home from lectures. 

According to ASP Afutu, three of those who died on the spot were in a commercial urvan bus which was ran over by cargo truck which supposedly had a break failure. 

Also, a taxi driver who realized the accident and was escaping was however trapped and killed by the truck. He said seven cars were destroyed in the process. 

ASP Afutu noted that the accident occurred at about 8.30 last night when a DAF cargo truck from the Kwadaso direction towards Sofoline allegedly developed brake failure and ran into several other vehicles resulting in deaths and injuries.

All the dead bodies have been deposited at the KATH mortuary pending identification and collection by the respective families.
