ANGLOGOLD RETRENCHMENMT AND OBUASI

Mr. Fred Attakumah-MD of AGA
The Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyemang has confirmed that some of the workers of Anglogold Ashanti will leave the company from the 12th of this month as part of the retrenchment exercise being carried out by the Obuasi Mine.

He said however, that the Municipal Assembly has no direct role to play in the exercise and could therefore not confirm the actual number of the employees affected by the downsize.

peaking to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, the Obuasi MCE refused to comment on whether or not government has formally approved the Redundancy request and the package involved the management of the company was said to have presented for approval to give legitimacy to the entire exercise.

It came to light during a meeting between some management members of Anglogold Ashanti and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong at Obuasi on 28th August this year, that government was scrutinizing the retrenchment proposal before deciding on what to do.

Mr. Ofori Agyemang admitted that even though the retrenchment exercise will have a negative impact on Obuasi and also the Municipal Assembly, especially in the economic challenges, there could be some positive development.

Currently, the Assembly has secured a land bank which is being developed for habitation as a Light Industrial Area.

he Area is meant to provide a business enclave for the retrenched workers and entrepreneurs in and around the Obuasi Municipality to invest to avoid capital flight from the economic area.

he MCE disclosed that so far work on the propose Light Industrial Area is complete while about one thousand applications have been received from individuals to establish their enterprises in the enclave.
