The Kumasi Zoo had to compete with attractions in the wildlife sub-sector in the Ashanti region such as the Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary at Kubease in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality, Manhyia Palace which has a number of wild birds, the Bonfobri and Owabi wildlife sanctuaries.

The Manhyia Palace has over the years been recognized as one of the best managed and visited tourist places in the region. Speaking in an interview with Ashanti Today in Kumasi, the Manager of the Zoo, Stephen Tamanja noted that it is the first time ever that the facility has received such a public recognition.

The achievement, according to him, has not only enhanced the attraction of the Zoo such that patronage of it by members of the public is likely to increase, but has also proven people who consider the Zoo as insignificant in the scheme of national development
wrong.Such critics, the Manager said are trying hard to get the facility relocated from Kumasi.

Mr. Tamanja said apart from recording a consistent increased annual income and contributing in no small way to the national revenue, the Zoo, due to its strategic location, plays other important functions in the fields of education, research, beautification of the city as well as  recreation for the general public.

The Zoo’s Manager recognized the Muslim community in particular for their high patronage of the facility during their festive occasions, which, according to him, continues to be a major boost for the visits and revenue generation of the Zoo.

Mr. Tamanja called on both well meaning individuals and groups both in the public and private sectors to help the management to rehabilitate the weak infrastructure, especially the cages that house the animals to maintain the Zoo for the good of the society.
