'DANGER' AT KWAMAN HEALTH CENTRE
Management of the Kwaman Health Centre is
appealing to government, well meaning individuals and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the
Centre for it to live up to its healthcare mandate.
Kwamang is within the
Sekyere Central district of the Ashanti region.
The Health Centre was built by
the government in the 1970s to provide primary healthcare to residents in and
around the community.
But with time, the facility was almost left to its fate
apart from the posting of the manpower to man it.
It was the usual communal
spirit and contribution of the non-resident citizens that enable the community
to construct an extended block that was intended for a Laboratory, Dental Unit
and a Theatre to improve on the services being offered by the Health Centre
which is being headed by A Physician Assistant due to the inadequate essential
facilities there.
This project took the community about 15 years to complete at
a cost of about 400 thousand Ghana Cedis without any external support.
However, due to the lack of space, the
original purpose of the block has been diverted into Wards for females and
children thereby increasing the bed capacity from the initial three to seven
now.
Nana Okofo Takyi Abeam, the Nkosuohene of Kwamang has been coordinating
contributions of the citizens abroad for the town’s development and laments the
lack of government’s support for the community over the years.
The Senior Staff
Nurse at the Health Centre, Mr. Wereko Bannor, also lamented that the staff now
rely on guess work in diagnosing patients of their ailments due to the absence
of a Laboratory Technician.
One other serious problem with the running of the
facility is the lack of an Ambulance required to ensure prompt referrals
particularly the numerous maternal cases to the Asante Mampong Municipal
Hospital for emergency attention.
He therefore appealed to the government to
support the Health Centre to live up to its mandate.
