KWAMANG IS 'SINKING' AND NEEDS URGENT HELP!!

The chiefs and people of Kwamang in the Sekyere Central district of the Ashanti region are overwhelmed by the extent of destruction being caused by rain water run-off that is fast ‘sinking’ the entire township.

A visit by Ashanti Today to the community revealed that unless an urgent remedial measure is adopted to stop the menace being caused by erosion, a catastrophe could be imminent.

An urgent concern to the chiefs and people of the town now is how to permanently deal with the devastation being caused by rain water runoff.

This is in spite of the fact that the planting of grass by some of the landlords has helped to check the devastation of the erosion.

Not only have the concrete foundation of houses eroded and trenches become deep gulley thereby endangering the lives of the people, especially children who enjoy playing in the rain, but some buildings could collapse at any point in time.

Some of the residents who spoke about seriousness of the problem, noted that despite several calls on the town’s authorities to help find a solution to the menace, there has not been any change.

In certain instances too, landlords and land ladies have lost almost their entire building plots to the erosion.

One such landlords, Appiah Kubi, has decided to stop the payment of ground rent to the traditional authority and use the amount involved to address the canker to save his family and the property.

The Chairman of the Kwamang Town Council, Emmanuel Kwasi Aboagye, also admitted the serious nature of the problem and said some efforts have already been made towards addressing it.

The community has organized a durbar involving all citizens and residents from both home and abroad purposely to raise funds towards addressing this particular menace with each citizen levied to pay a specific amount so as to avert any calamity.

The Paramount Chief, Nana Abayie Ntori Nimpa, was emphatic that the canker poses a danger and should be addressed.

He appealed for the support of the Sekyere Central District Assembly since the construction of storm drains is so expensive that communal labour alone cannot solve the problem within the shortest possible time as the situation requires.
