SOCIETY OF THE DISABLED LAUNCHES 37TH CONFERENCE
The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled
has launched its 37th biennial conference in Kumasi on the theme: “Inclusion
Matters, Work for All”.
The programme brought together more than 200 persons
with various forms of physical disabilities.
In an address the National President
of the Society, Reverend. John Meful explained
that the purpose of conference is to raise funds to finance some of the activities
of the Association.
Amongst them are
setting up educational board and advocacy trust fund to encourage higher
education especially PhDs and Masters Programmes for members of the GSPD.
He said
the Society has aimed to raise an amount of 50 thousand Ghana to undertake
those projects.
The Jachie Training centre is a major vocational training center
for PWDs which is owned by GSPD.
According to Rev. Meful, the
center has trained PWDs in areas such as Kente weaving, dress making, tie and
dye as well as leather works.
The center has facilities for workshops,
administration block, dining hall and masters’ bungalow.
Reverend Meful used the
opportunity to call on government and stakeholders to give the training center
a facelift.
He also appealed to individuals to support the training centre to
acquire school bus and assist in feeding the trainees.
Amongst the activities to
mark the 37th biennial conference are cleaning up exercise within
the Kumasi metropolis, health screening, games as well as excursion.
Reverend
Meful encouraged all PWDs to protect their dignity by desisting from alms begging
as a means of livelihood.
The Regional
Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun urged members of the Society to continue
to upgrade themselves and try to live at peace with all other members of the
society to engender social peace and unity.
