CRI RELEASES 4 IMPROVED YAM VARIETIES
The National Varietal Release Committee has
approved all four new Yam varieties developed by Research Scientists at the
Crops Research Institute.
The approval was after the Team of Researchers had
presented details of their research on the development of the Yam varieties to
the Committee at Fumesua near Kumasi today, Tue April 11.
The Committee however
altered the proposed names given to the new yam by the Researches to enable the
people particularly farmers easily accept the new yam varieties.
The varieties
are CRI Afasepa, CRI Afasebiri, CRI Ahuodenfo and CRI Sonyiato, a Gonja
language which translates into good taste and yield.
In his presentation, A
Principal Research Scientist of the Crops Research Institute of the Council for
Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Emmanuel Otoo, who is the Lead
Researcher, described all the new yam varieties are pests and disease resistant,
adaptable to most climatic conditions in the country as well as high yielding.
According to him, the research which began in 2003 till now, was carried out at
Ejura, Kintampo and Atebubu in the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions to test the
suitable environmental conditions suitable for their growth.
Dr. Otoo disclosed
also that the new yam varieties are rich in Vitamin ‘C’ and protein making them
superior in nutritional value than the yam already on the market.
Additionally,
he noted in addition to the fact that local farmers have already adopted the
new yam varieties, there is a potentially greater ready market in Ghana and the
neighbouring countries.
Among the factors considered by the National Varietal
Release Committee Chaired by Osei Akoto of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture,
were value for cultivation, Use and Stability.
Before considering the new
varieties for approval, members of the Committee visited the trial farm to
learn at first hand the research activities and the physical outcome of the
study.
