GOV'T. TO PROSECUTE CMS 'ARSONIST/S-MoH
The
Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, says the country and its development
partners have still not overcome the shock and misfortune related to the
destruction of the Central Medical Store through wildfire.
The Central Medical
Store is the national depot for the storage of medical supplies meant for the
healthcare sector. Initial investigations into the cause and extent of the fire
outbreak revealed a possible arson as the cause.
The destruction has cost the
country huge sums of money and is yet to be fully restored.
Addressing
stakeholders of the health sector at this year’s National Health Summit in
Kumasi, the Health Minister disclosed that government will very soon commence
action to bring anyone connected with the suspected arson to face the law.
Mr.
Agyemang Manu assured also that government is strategizing to put the structure
back into operation and appealed for the assistance of all the stakeholders for
its success.
Touching on other matters of the health sector, the Minister
directed all departments and agencies under the Ministry to cease the
engagement of Temporary or Casual Staff immediately.
Rather, they should
compile data on all such employees within their outfits and submit same to the
Ministry of Health by close of this month.
The measure, he explained, is to
deal with the blatant breach of the National Labour Law that mandates employers
to convert temporary staff engaged more than six months into permanent staff.
Mr. Agyemang Manu disclosed that the Ministry is presently battling legal suits
caused by such concerned workers.
The directive is also to ensure maximum
utilization of internally generated funds.
The Minister asked all Heads of
health sector agencies to strictly comply with the newly introduced Capping
policy on IGF by the government which he explained is to help address abuse of
the previous policy while promoting greater transparency and accountability in
the use of internally generated funds.
