KSI: TRANSPORT FARES INCREASE-TRANSPORTERS SHARPLY DIVIDED

The scheduled upward adjustment in transport fares as announced by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council a week ago has seen a mixed reaction by transport operators in Kumasi with varied reasons being attributed.

At the VIP Station, the fares for buses from Kumasi to Accra have been maintained. The fares range from 30 Ghana Cedis to 40 Ghana Cedis and were last reviewed in December of last year.

The Station Managers noted that even though their leadership was yet to meet to take a firm decision on whether or not to increase the fares, they were doubtful of any change, considering the fact that despite the many fuel prices increment last year, they were prevailed to maintain their fares.

They therefore do not see any reason why at this time when prices of petroleum products have begun dropping, fares should be increased.

The Accra-bound urvan buses have also maintained their old fares of 30 Ghana Cedis.

At the Asafo Market-Tarkwa, Kumasi-Takoradi Station, the Station Master, Kwabena Sarpong, said the the urvan buses and the Mercedes Benz buses are charging the old fares of 32 Ghana Cedis and 20 Ghana Cedis, with no intention of increasing it.

A driver of the Station, Samuel Ofori, said an increment will cause their vehicle owners to also adjust upward the daily sales, as well as the daily booking fee, at the expense of the drivers who do the actual work.

Aside from this, the prices of fuel have started reducing at the pump.

The passengers who spoke to our correspondent corroborated the fact that their fares have not changed. On the contrary, intra-city transporters popularly known as Trotro and Taxi have increased their fares.

The Trotro drivers have adjusted their fares by 20 Pesewas across the board, while that of Taxis depends on the distance.

Interestingly, there is a substantial reduction in the acrimony that has in the past characterized similar transport fare increments due to poor communication and management of the adjustments.
