REDUCED HUMAN ACTIVITY IN KSI ON XMAS DAY

The usual hustle and bustle in the busiest commercial areas of the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, have seen little commercial activity on the Christmas day.

These areas, notable the General Post Office area, Prempeh 11 street and Paul Sagoe Lane which consititute part of the central business district of Kumasi looked deserted on December 25.

A scan of the city by Ashanti Today to find out the business environment on the day revealed a significant reduction in human presence in those vibrant commercial areas leading to low sales.

This could be attributable to church and certain social activities held to commemorate the supposed birthday of Jesus Christ which usually 'travels' into the new year.

The normal heavy human and vehicular traffic on a  Thursday  in a working week had also appreciably reduced given way to easy movement of people vehicles.

Apart from the road connecting the Kejetia Traffic Light and the Cocoa House which was as usual heavily congested with vehicles as at 1 pm, virtually all the other notable busy roads including the 'almighty' pretty impassable Roman Hill area had become virtually empty with vehicles.

The most notable area that saw even vibrant selling and trading activities on the day was the inner Roman Hill area near the Kumasi Central Market dedicated for the sale of footwear.

At that place, a number of last minute christmas shoppers had come there either with their children or alone to window-shop of procure footwear for the yuletide such that human  movement was extremely difficult.

Another area which was experiencing  'unauthorized' vibrant commercial activity was the newly constructed overhead foot bridged linking Adum and the Central Market.

As if sanctioned by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, a number of traders dealing in Christmas-related wares had taken

advantage of the season to do business on that bridge thereby impeding human movement.

One notable feature of the occasion was the high visibility of Police personnel  on the road.

They had been deployed to control traffic at almost every intersection to ensure that vehicular movement was not unjustifiable obstructed.

The only route that still had heavy traffic was the erstwhile Kumasi Brewery-Atonsu road which had no police man on duty as at 1.30 pm.
