NDC MINI CONFERENCE ENDS ABRUPTLY

The mini Conference of the ruling NDC to elect its new National Youth Organizer and two Deputies ended unceremoniously at the Youth Centre at Ahinsan in Kumasi yesterday

This followed a dispute over the results for two of the nine  candidates for the Deputy National Youth Organizer.

The two are the incumbent, James Fonu Kpatakpa and one Abigail Mensah Ellorm.

The initial counting put Mr. Kpatakpa as one of the two elected Deputy National Youth Organizers with Ms Ellorm placing third.

The difference between the two candidates was just six votes and seemed accepted by Ms Ellorm.

However, just as the Ashanti Regional Electoral Director, Paul Boateng was about to officially declare the results, supporters and agents of Ms Ellorm popped up with calls for a recount of the votes and thereafter started creating confusion.

This compelled the Chairman of the Elections Committee of the NDC, Ken Dzrasah to order a recount but that did not go down well with Mr. Kpatakpa and his supporters.

Their contention was that the aggrieved candidate ought to have called for the recount right after the initial votes counting and argued that he and his supporters would not be able to tell what their opponents had done during the interval.

The unyielding stance taken by the two aggrieved parties and the confusion that accompanied their positions forced Mr. Dzirasah to ask the Electoral officer to declare the results after which any aggrieved party could take the matter up.

The supporters of Ms Ellorm would again not allow that and attempted to physically attack the electoral officer and Mr. Dzirasah during which the high table was broken.

The police personnel then escorted the Regional Electoral Dorector, Paul Boateng into his car and sent away followed by Mr. Dzirasa.

Meanwhile, in the undisputed contest for the National Youth Organizer position, a 36-year old professional Accountant and a businessman, Sidii Abubakar Musah dislodged the incumbent, Ludwig Hlordzi.

While Mr. Musah polled 382 votes, Mr. Hlordzi managed 192 of the votes. One of the seven candidates, Marcus Garvin stepped down before the voting could start.
