3RD NATIONAL SANITATION DAY DEDICATED TO ASANTEHENE
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has dedicated the 3rd National Sanitation Day in honour and appreciation of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu.
Consequently, the
Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi will be the nerve centre of the next
Sanitation Day to be held on Monday 3rd January, 2015.
The sector
Minister, Julius Debrah, made this known during his interactions with staff of
some of the metropolitan, municipal and district Assemblies as part of his
working tour of those areas to find out for himself the progress of
implementation of government programmes and policies.
The Minister,
who is on the tour with his two deputies, is also using the working visit to
galvanize support for the next National Sanitation Day activity.
For this
reason, he has also been interacting with traditional leaders and some
identifiable groups to also get involved.
Mr. Debrah explained that the
dedication of the 3rd National Sanitation day which happens to be
the first in the New Year, is in recognition of Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s interest
and active involvement in the exercise so far and this is to express gratitude
to him.
President John Mahama, some Ministers of State and some public figures
will join the programme in Kumasi to ensure its success.
Mr. Debrah disclosed
also that about 20 thousand litter bins will be distributed to institutions to
encourage proper management of waste.
The Minister explained also that the
object of the National Sanitation Day as a symbol to motivate people to
continually ensure proper environmental and personal cleanliness within their
working places and residences to prevent avoidable diseases.
Mr. Debrah
described as very unfortunate the United Nations’ rating of Ghana among the 10
filthiest countries in the world in a recent survey, saying that everything
possible must be done to reverse the bad image.
Meanwhile, the Minister and his
two deputies, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum have jointly
visited the Oti Landfill site where waste generated and collected from the
Kumasi metropolis is managed.
They also inspected progress of work on the waste
composite site under construction at Adagya in the Bosomtwe district also in
the Ashanti region.
The Production Manager, Edward Ghansah noted that on
completion, the site can process 600 tonnes of a day and will involve sorting,
compositing of the waste into manure as well as provide another landfill site
for waste management.
Mr. Ghansah said the company, which is expected to be
completed next year, will employ 500 people.
