GOVERNMENT DEVELOPS ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
A national policy on the preservation
of the environment for the present generation and posterity has been introduced
by the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The policy
emphasizes participatory approach towards addressing environmental problems in
the country.
Copies have been made available to metropolitan, municipal and
district assemblies and key institutions to guide them in their efforts, with a
directive from the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
for the Assemblies to ensure stringent enforcement of environmental laws.
The
Sector Minister, Akwasi Oppong-Fosu announced this at the 56th
Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi.
It was under
the theme, “Sanitation and Environment, Islamic Perspective”. Mr. Oppong-Fosu
urged especially Muslims to complement his Ministry’s efforts by creating
awareness about the policy and also the need for Ghanaians to protect and
preserve the country’s environment as one of the greatest assets bestowed on
the nation by Allah.
They should as well embrace the National Sanitation
programme initiated by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
The Senior Surgeon at the 37 Military Hospital, Dr. Nabil Nuamah who was the
Guest Speaker, said in view of the significance of cleanliness in Islam,
Muslims should have the highest standard of cleanliness and personal hygiene of
all people in the world.
However, heaps of garbage has become an identity of
Muslim homes and localities, with majority of Muslim areas marked with
unhygienic and unhealthy conditions.
Dr. Nuamah emphasized that Muslims can
only reverse this by observing and living the true meaning of Islam.
The National
Chairman of Ghana Muslim Mission, Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu said the organization
will champion a national sanitation campaign next year.
This, he explained is
to complement efforts by the Government as a major step in seeking a remedy to
the alarming menace.
Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu said campaign by the Ghana Muslim
Mission will include a national stakeholder’s workshop, public awareness and
education campaigns, and clean-up exercises throughout the country.
