A 46-year old mixed farmers based at Boadi
near the KNUST, Baba Abdulai Rauf, was named as the overall Best Metro Farmer
for the year.
He took away as his prize, a mix blower spraying machine, a flat
television set, a DVD player, four cutlasses, two wellington boots, a quantity
of agro chemicals, a mattress and a certificate.
The other award winning
farmers were recognized for excelling in various specific crop and animal
production such as vegetables, plantain, maize, rice and small ruminants while
the Kumasi High School was rewarded as the best in Institutional farming for
2014.
All the award winners received prizes that included cutlasses, bars of
washing soap, knapsack sprayer, wellington boots, agro chemicals and
certificates.
The ceremony was spiced up with poetry and drama by pupils of the
Gyinyase M/A Basic School to reinforce the theme for the celebration which is: “Eat
What You Grow”.
In an address read for him, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief
Executive, Kojo Bonsu emphasized the significant contribution of agriculture to
both the national economy and human survival.
According to him, while
contributing about 30 percent to the national Gross Domestic Product,
agriculture alone employs about 60 percent of the working population and 49
percent of the national exchange earnings.
Mr. Kojo Bonsu therefore stressed
the fact that improving the sector could result in a transformation of the
national economy, increase food security, create more job opportunities as well
as reduce poverty among the people.
It is in line with this that government is
working hard to promote the consumption of what is locally produced which will
in effect, save the country some money.
