NDC EXPANDS ELECTORAL COLLEGE, TRANSFORMS PROPAGANDA SECRETARY

The National Democratic Congress, NDC, has expanded its electoral College with immediate effect.

The party has increased the membership of its delegates at all national congresses from the current three thousand plus to 250 thousand.

The expansion of the electoral College was part of a number of resolutions passed by the delegates at the party*s 2014 National Delegates Congress at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

The increase in the number of the party/s delegates makes the NDC about the political party in  Africa with the largest electoral college.

The reform is meant to avoid the perennial complaints during internal party competitions that some aspirants take advantage of the relatively smaller number of the delegates to induce them for victory.

The party/s founder, ex-Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings and the incumbent national Chairman, Dr. Kwabena Agyei are among the complainants of the financial inducement of delegates for which reason, Mr. Rawlings wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, broke away from the party after her worst defeat at the Sunyani Congress that retained the late Professor J.E.A. Mills as the NDC/s Presidential candidate for the 2012 presidential election.

The Electoral Committee of the party, Chaired by former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Ken Dzrasa, told the Congress that with the expansion of the electoral college, a lot more card-bearing members of the party including former MMDCEs  and Ministers, Presidential staffers as well as all party Executives from the Ward to the National level will be delegates.

The reform is expected to become fully operational from next year when the party goes to another Congress to elect its Presidential candidate for the 2016 national elections.

In a related development, the 2014 Congress has altered the position of Propaganda Secretary to Communications Officer of the NDC to meet current political demands.

The party has been constantly attacked by its main opponents, the NPP, as a party that thrives on falsehood because of the office of the Propaganda Secretary.

In his report to the Congress, the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah told the delegates that the party/s biometric registration of all card-bearing members across the country has already started and making great gains saying that the exercise has captured about 150 thousand members in the Volta region while in the Northern region, about 130 thousand members have been duly registered.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah informed the Congress also that the party is very much on course in establishing its ideological school for the effective training of party faithful to better appreciate what the NDC stands for.

Present at the Congress were the President and leader of the party, John Dramani Mahama, his Vice, Kwesi Bekoe-Amissah Arthur, the First Lady,Mrs. Lordina Mahama, Foundier of the party, Jerry John Rawlings and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Algban Sumani Bagbin.
