THREE ROBBERS IN POLICE GRIPS
Three persons are in the grips of the
police in Kumasi for their alleged involvement in robbing unsuspecting
passengers in taxis of their monies and personal effects.
They are, Akwesi
Frimpong alias Alhasan, 33 years old and an ex-convict in similar crime, Issac
Boateng, alias Okey, a 25 year old taxi driver and Frank Osei, alias Obese, a
25 year old table top provision seller.
Akwesi Frimpong was arrested in 2012 by
the Ashanti Regional CID for a similar crime in Kumasi and was jailed seven
months in hard labour.
Briefing journalists in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional
Police Commander, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye said on the 28th of last
month, the Suntreso Police Patrol team had information that three young men,
noted for using taxi cabs to pick and rob passengers, had picked a passenger
and were heading towards the Ahodwo roundabout.
The Patrol Team, upon the
information pursued the said vehicle and signaled the driver to stop, but he
rather accelerated to escape from the police.
DCOP Boakye said the driver’s action
aroused the suspicion of the police, who then gave the driver a chase.
The
suspects later abandoned the vehicle and attempted to absconded, leaving their
victim in the vehicle.
The police however apprehended them and an immediate
search on them revealed a mobile phone hidden in the pocket of Akwesi Frimpong.
The passenger who was on board the taxi later identified the phone as his that
was stolen from his bag.
DCOP Boakye said during investigations, it was found
that the three suspects in recent times have been using a taxi cab to pick
unsuspecting passengers in the metropolis and in the course of the journey, rob
them and pull them out of the vehicle.
He said all three suspects admitted to
the crime and confessed that they have been into the “pick and rob” operations
for seven months now and that women especially were their targets.
DCOP said
they further admitted that they normally pick their victims from obscure places
and usually pull them out of the vehicle at places that people will not easily
suspect them after they succeeded in robbing their victims.
