PRESIDENT'S EJISU-JUABEN MCE NOMINEE REJECTED
The President’s Municipal Chief Executive
nominee for Ejisu-Juaben in the Ashanti region, Kwaku Afrifah Yamoah-Ponkoh has
been rejected outright by members of the Municipal Assembly.
At an
extra-ordinary meeting of the Assembly at held at Ejisu today, Tuesday December 15, only 25
of the Assembly Members voted ‘Yes’ for him while 41 voted ‘No’ against his
appointment.
A total of 66 members cast. By the votes, Mr. Yamoah-Ponkoh does
not have any second chance of consideration by the Assembly Members.
This is because the number of votes in his favour
was less than 50 percent that should have allowed for a second round of voting
on his nomination.
The Local Government Act also requires that a President’s
nominee for the post of a Metropolitan, Municipal or District Chief Executive
should secure at least two-thirds majority of the votes cast to be confirmed
for that position.
By the decision of the Municipal Assembly, the President has
to nominate either a new person or Yamoah-Ponkoh to be considered by the
Assembly.
At the meeting was the Ashanti Regional Minister, Peter Anarfi-Mensah
who had earlier asked the Assembly members to consider the larger interest of
the municipality’s socio-economic development in deciding the fate of the
nominee.
There were mixed feelings among the people at the vicinity of the venue
of the meeting. While most of the people at
the precinct of the venue of the meeting, mainly residents of Ejisu were seen
openly jubilating over the outright rejection of Mr. Yamoah-Ponkoh, his
sympathizers and himself looked highly disappointed at the turn of event.
Meanwhile, the Assembly has elected one Gabriel Ansah Sasraku as the new
Presiding Member after his two contenders stepped down at the 11th
hour for him to be elected unopposed.
